Multi-Racial

I strongly agree to this statement. This approach should be introduced to encourage integration and cultural pluralism.

Singapore is always different from other country. We share our care and concern towards each other and even towards other races. We had never allowed one race to dominate the whole country. The government has strong belief we as Singaporean should stay harmoniously with no fight, no riots. However when in the past Singapore has experience riots. After all this riots, the government have even stronger belief that living harmoniously is essential. An example will be the Maria Hertorgh riot. This riot had occurred on the 11 December 1950. It happened during World War 2. Maria’s father was a sergent in the army. When the war broke out he was captured by the Japanese Army as he was a sergent in the Dutch Army. When he was being capture, Maria was put under the care of Aminah. Soon Maria was raised as a muslim. However Maria was baptized by a priest before she was being sent to Aminah to be taken care. After the war, her biological parents came to take her back, Aminah refused to let her leave with her parents. It has ended up as a court case. Aminah thought that allowing her to get married with another man will allowed her to stay with her forever. In the end, Maria’s marriage with a muslim teacher was not recognized by the court. The court had announced her to be given back to her biological parents.

Soon people were unhappy with the sentence being announced by the court. Therefore it has created social unrest. Riots started, the muslim’s thinks that they are not recoginzed by the court nor the government. They find it unfair to them. This riot has caused 18 being killed and 173 injured.

The government has realized the importance to make this nation a harmonious place for all to live in. I am sure that the government does not want any of their citizens to die just because of such riots.

Another example I would mention is the people action’s party (PAP) in Singapore. They would always make sure that the minorities in Singapore is being look into and not neglected by the citizens or the government. They would always ensure that within the members that were being elected they will be one from the minority races being elected to be part of them. I think that with this measure being implemented the nation will be happy and allow the minority to realise that they are not neglected by anyone in the country.

If without the government coming out with different approach for their citizens will Singapore be deter from all the wars and fight? The Singapore Government has made an important point to ensure all people, races and religion is being well taken care. They had shown no biasness against which ever races or religion.

Take the pledge for an example. This pledge is written by S R Rajaratnam, Our founding fathers. This pledge is within us since young. Ever since we enter school, be it the nursery school or childcare, everyone will recite this as a united nation. This is a measure that the Government implemented.

The government has safeguard the interest of the minority in Singapore, the different communities also does different things to safe guard all their interest. Within the communities they organize different events during different point of time of the year. Take the Chinese New Year’s for an example. They organise a steamboat feast for the old folks who does not have a family to enjoy this festive moment. In Singapore we not only celebrate one event but many events with many other races together. The national day is one event that all will celebrate together regardless of race, language or religion together to make this nation a harmonious country for all to stay in.

This has allowed Singapore to be deterred from all war. Being able to stay harmonious and together, this had warned the other country to think twice before they want to start a war with Singapore. The private sector has done their part to make Singapore a harmonious country. They have done their part as they contribute much to Singapore's society. Therefore this should go on and on. Let’s all make Singapore a greater and better place to live! Continue this peaceful moment together!

What price victory? Ten times more than defeat

The huge costs that universities can incur fighting employment tribunal claims, even when the institution is vindicated by the result, have been highlighted by a case in Scotland.

The University of St Andrews spent more than £200,000 on legal fees successfully defending itself against a claim brought by a former lecturer - around 10 times the amount that it might have expected to pay in compensation had it lost the case.

The claim was lodged by Declan Quigley, who alleged that in 2002 he had been forced out of his job as a lecturer in social anthropology by a culture of bullying in his department.

He lost his claim for constructive dismissal in 2004, as well as a subsequent appeal.

A Freedom of Information request has now revealed that the university spent £204,000 on the case - far more than the lecturer could have expected to win.

Dr Quigley, who now practises alternative medicine in Barcelona, claimed that the university and its principal at the time, Brian Lang, had failed in their duty to protect him from what he said were intolerable working conditions.

However, the tribunal dismissed his case after hearing evidence that Dr Quigley had been determined to leave. He later brought an appeal on various points of law but these were thrown out by the Employment Appeals Tribunal following a hearing in 2006.

A spokeswoman for St Andrews said the university had "no option" but to defend the allegations made by Dr Quigley.

She said: "We have a commitment to act fairly with respect to all employees and to publicly establish the facts, especially where the reputation of an academic department is being attacked. In this instance, that responsibility came at considerable cost.

"We regret the cost. As a default, the university seeks to ensure that all its resources are focused on teaching and research. But in this case we are vindicated by the result."

Dr Quigley said that, had he won the case, the employment tribunal would have been unlikely to award him more than £20,000.

"I would have settled for much less than the £200,000-plus that the university ended up spending on its legal expenses," he said.

Please help me

Please help me. I have a principal who is nagging me although all my students are passing their classes. Her comments are that because I was raised Catholic I do not have to teach like I am in a catholic school. Another teacher makes fun of my accent and handwriting. I was born in Europe. The other teacher is American born, falsifies attendance records and yet nothing is done. What can be done? I need this job but it really annoys me to work with such an unethical group of people.

This cake is delectable

Reading Sarah Selecky's Giller-nominated collection of short stories This Cake is for The Party (Thomas Allen, 2010) is like spending an afternoon at Kalendar, catching up with a group of terribly interesting people, all about your/my age and level of education, all dealing with things you/I am/could be dealing with, and to all of whom you/I can relate. They (the stories and the people) are smart and funny and poignant. Selecky's language is not over-ornate but is a little rococco, a little decorated with swirls and arabesques, but so subtly you hardly notice.

My favourite stories in the collection are "Standing up for Janey," in which a young couple that shouldn't get married plans to get married, causing one maid of honour and one very suspicious ex-boyfriend to  come to terms with their own lost loves-- for each other, for the couple in question, and even for themselves--, and "Prognosis" a kind of open letter from a daughter-in-law to the mother of her husband, where apologies and tensions are worked out amongst a series of miracles (a mysterious crying ear and the visage of Virgin Mary in a supermarket apple) and academics ("the epistemological diversity of current Catholic theologins" (141)). All in all, a fast read, a very Canadian read (consider, in the story "Where are You Coming From, Sweethart?" these references: "The Big Smoke," "the Beer Store," "the CNE," "a guy who knew the Tragically Hip," "the bong-and-incense store on Queen Street," "Metric t-shirt," Fluevog Mary Janes," and to top it off, "a Roots bag"), and an incredibly enjoyable read.

Goes perfectly with a glass of Osoyoos LaRose.

Abused PhD candidate

As a dissertation editor hired by a PhD candidate who is being emotionally abused by her adviser, I've been googling "grad-student abuse" to find out more about this sickness. I'm appalled how little is being exposed about this, and almost nothing that's recent. It appears to me that this adviser is sabotaging the grad student's work in order to keep her under her thumb as long as possible. This adviser is isolating the student in order to emotionally abuse her, keeping her on the phone all hours of the day and night. She's even ordered the student not to have contact with me. I've APA-edited the paper perfectly and the adviser continues to undo my work and revert to previous versions randomly, so no one knows what's in it anymore. All the while insisting that the student have it done YESTERDAY... The student is about to have a breakdown and it seems there's nothing I can do to help her, since she needs that lunatic's signature in order to submit her paper. How do students keep from murdering their advisers who are certifiably insane?

Niall Ferguson's The Ascent of Money
"In 2006, the British Financial Services Authority carried out a survey of public financial literacy which revealed...one [person] in ten did not know which was the better discount for a television originally priced at 250 pounds: 30 pounds or 10 per cent. As that example makes clear, the questions posed by the surveys were of the most basic nature. It seems reasonable to assume that only a handful of those polled would have been able to explain the difference between a 'put' and a 'call' option, for example, much less the difference between a CDO and a CDS" (14).

Primary school admission

I think that neither one should be taken in place as part of the Primary school admission system.

Meritocracy allow the talented to remain talented. However, primary school is where they started to learn and pick up things fast. I think that everyone should get an equal opportunity to which primary school they are going to be admitted in. It should not matter whether the school cohort had did well or not for the PSLE scores. If at the start the wrong morale is being instilled to the child it affects the growth of the child. They will have the thinking that the neighbourhood school students are not worth to be friend with or etc. Why should we even create such a mentality to our future generations?

Why should we even group ourselves according to economic status and background? When we are first born to this world neither of us is able to choose which parent we want and what kind of background we wanted. Therefore we should not even allow the different economic status and background take the limelight as part of the primary school admission system. Take the article as an example. As the article mention that Raffles Girls’ Primary School is located at an area which is surrounded by many private housing estates. Many of their students are those who are living in those housing estates. Should it mean that those who are staying in the HDB Flat do not even have the chance or opportunity to admit into the school? The article also mentions that parents who are the alumni of the school have the top priority for their child to admit into the school. Is it really that admitting into a good school we will have better certifications and get higher pay as compared to those from a neighbouring school with the same qualifications?

Educations is something that all should be taking. Education is not something that the parent can take it as a comparison for. Parents should not be comparing of which is better and which is not. I am sure what MM Lee said was right. He made a visit to Raffles Girls’ Primary school and Punggol Primary school. He sees no different in the facility and school system. Therefore I think that it is more appropriate that there should not be any distinction between the good and neighbourhood school.

Neighbourhood school also allow student to do well and proceed on with better secondary school educations. I am sure it does not mean that never get into the better school since primary school they will not be able to go over to a better school during their secondary school life or even stop them from moving on to the university in the furture. If one is good is forever good. Going which ever school from start does not matter. However to me I think that the most important is the growth of the child in terms of thinking, maturity and how well they are being discipline.

Disrespectful behaviors at U of I?

IOWA CITY — Complaints of disrespectful behavior to the University of Iowa Office of the Ombudsperson have increased steadily over the past four years, a trend university officials called disappointing and disturbing.

In presenting their annual report to the Faculty Council on Tuesday, two ombudsmen said 22 percent of their office’s visitors in 2009-10 came with complaints about disrespectful behavior. That’s up from 17 percent in 2008-09, 12 percent in 2007-08 and 8 percent in 2006-07.

That follows an alarming national trend showing workplaces in general are becoming more disrespectful, with incidents of bullying, yelling, swearing and shunning, staff ombudsman Cynthia Joyce said.

“It is a real concern to us,” she said.

Two years ago, the university office started tracking complaints of bullying, which falls under the category of disrespectful behavior. Explicit complaints about workplace bullying were made by 10 percent of visitors in both 2008-09 and 2009-10.

“The consequences can be very severe ... so we’re worried about that as well,” Joyce said.

Such behavior is a departmental culture issue that must be addressed at the level of each department, said Susan Johnson, the faculty ombudsman.

The office served an all-time high of 517 visitors in 2009-10, a 6 percent increase from the previous year. University staff make up the bulk of the visitors, at 48 percent, followed by 30 percent students and 17 percent faculty.

The increase in visitors could be because of better visibility of the office on campus, along with the belief that early intervention in conflicts is of value, officials said.

The largest area of concern and complaint for all visitor groups to the office stems from a supervisory relationship, such as with a boss or dean — or a faculty member, in the case of students.

The office also is seeing an growing number of situations in which information is posted on Facebook or some other social media site that begins or worsens a conflict. Some people have been fired after inappropriate Facebook postings, Johnson said.

the over-listener strikes at YVR

I overheard (okay, am straining my ears) the following conversation at VYR:

First man, in chinos and long-sleeved MEC gortex shirt (paradoxical dressing?): "I always liked that pizza place on Edmonton Trail for their, you know, pizzas."
Second man, in suit and tie: "I like pizza."
1st man: "You know that place on Edmonton Trail?"
2nd man: "Yeah."
1st man: "I like their pizzas."

***
which wouldn't have be too weird, I've had similar conversations when I'm tired and not paying attention. But then they switch roles...
***

2nd man: "There's this place on Edmonton Trail, I think it closed down, they used to make the best pizzas."
1st man: "I know, right?"

***
& he didn't even sound incredulous, just in full on agreement mode. I think they were complete strangers.

Merrigan versus University of Gloucestershire (UK)

Nothing like good news to remind everybody of anti-bullying week (15-19 November 2010).

Summary

Kara Loraine represented a Claimant who alleged that because she was raising concerns about financial mismanagement at the university (protected disclosures), the senior management of the university tried to push her out of her job and when that failed she was sidelined from involvement in various projects.

The Tribunal upheld the complaints, finding that although the university had been supportive when the focus of the investigations/disclosures was on one individual Dean who had since left the university, the senior management’s attitude changed when the Claimant made disclosures that implicated others. In particular the Tribunal held that the Dean of the Business School had influenced others to form a negative view of the Claimant because of her disclosures and this was the reason for the attempt to remove her from her job and the sidelining, which were also found to be detriments.

The Claimant was awarded £6,000 for injury to feelings.

Unison Press Release:

UNISON helped a whistleblower win compensation from the University of Gloucestershire after she was sidelined for exposing suspected financial mismanagement.

The Business Development Manager at the University was asked by the University’s former Deputy Vice Chancellor, Paul Bowler, to look into the finances in June 2009. He had been hired to put together a financial recovery plan for the university, which is on the Higher Education and Funding Council for England’s “at risk” list.

After Mr Bowler left the university in November, the attitude of senior staff, including the Vice Chancellor, Head of Finance, Dean of the Business School and Director of Marketing within the university changed towards Mrs Merrigan.

She told the Tribunal that they had colluded against her to was move her off the work she was doing - the recovery plan and financial investigation were effectively suspended.

Bristol Employment Tribunal found yesterday (30 September) that the Dean of the Business School, who was implicated in Mrs Merrigan’s disclosures, influenced the University to take action against Mrs Merrigan.

As a result, the Business Development Manager had suffered at the hands of the University for disclosing information on financial problems and she was awarded compensation of £6,000 for injury to feelings.

Doctrine of Affections

Okay so I google myself occasionally.

& for some reason, you can read my review of Doctrine of Affections on this strange website.
"I changed my mind about this book. After reading, in order, the first 10 of Headrick's 11 musically- themed short stories, I was lulled into feeling I had this writer figured out. Although each story occupies disparate moments in time and space - from a melancholic guitarist in Post-Napoleonic Paris to a jazz- loving Engineering student at UBC - each tale is shrouded in tonal sameness, evoking a similar- feeling longing for fidelity to a higher truth. But it was the last story, the one told by a version of the author himself, that shook me out of my stupor and made me pay attention...." Read more.
Then, if you're keen, you can check out Mr. Headrick's blog.

Behind the Times

I realize my blogging has been spotty at best. I take for granted that I am beholden to no one.

Some belated shout-outs are in order, however!! And here they are, in a list of THINGS YOU MUST DO WITH YOUR FIRDAY (it's mostly about buying books):

1. Feeling Expansive? Answer: The Journey Prize Anthology #22.

My amazing friend Andrew MacDonald has his short story "Eat Fist!" chosen for this year's shortlist. After reading it, I was chuffed to discover I had already read a portion of the story in manuscript form. How connected do I feel? Plus, the story is a truly Andrew-story: featuring a lesbian body-builder, Wonder Woman and poignant moments about Ukrainian heritage. Andrew was interviewed by the National Post, and he sounds very charming.

And then "Eat Fist!" won a Western Magazine Award for fiction. It's like dominoes of good feelings.

2. Need Relationship Advice in a time of War and Turmoil? Answer: The Mandarins by Simone De Beauvoir.

I was supposed to bring Simone home to Calgary for a friend abroad because her suitcases are too heavy. Instead, I brought her to Vancouver and my bedside table.

3. Feeling Indie? Answer: magazine, Broken Pencil #49

In which I wrote a lil' book review (I'm proud, I'll admit it) of Paul Headrick's Doctrine of Affections, and in which resides other work by contributors I adore: Andrew (he's ubiquitous these days), Spencer Gordon and Matt Loney.

There is also a review of The Sentimentalists by Johanna Skibsrud, which, if you have been paying attention, just won the Giller. It's so interesting to read a review that was written before the hype. In it, reviewer Kris Rothstein is by no means won over by the book-- Rothstein writes "The Sentimentalists is a thoughtful, gentle novel, and while it fails to deliver a strong narrative, its careful prose demands attention." Well, attention it received-- and when I first saw the review, I thought (evilly) that this is a one of those moments of hindsight where you wish you'd written, "this book should win the Giller!" just so you can grin maniacally when it does. But, the review is in fact better in every way because it was written pre-hype. I have not read the book (yet), so I remain conflicted about what the Giller's effect on my own reading will be.

Leave No Child Untested

With No Child Left Behind (Leave No Child Untested), there is increasing pressure being placed on preschool programs to prepare children to enter kindergarten. In fact, the current National Head Start Test (NRS) is an excellent example of how government is insisting that preschool programs be accountable for preparing children to enter school. In discussing reauthorization of Head Start, Congress recognized that the NRS is poorly designed and has ordered scientific researchers to analyze the assessment and make it a more effective tool. Unfortunately, Head Start Agencies must continue to administer the poor assessment until it is analyzed and made more appropriate.

While I have no problem with being accountable for early childhood services, I am concerned about our ability to place a national standardized assessment on a four year-old child. Early Childhood professionals recognize that to paint an accurate picture of a child’s school preparation, there must be observation, analysis and formal assessments within the classroom environment to authenticate the information. Can a standardized assessment really do that? Are we going to be able to develop a system that will give us an accurate picture of the child’s learning? Given the track record of other standardized tests, I am not sure we can create an accurate instrument.

bilateral relationships

To compete in this globalization world, Singapore has to maintain independent and interdependent. We have to be independent. When all else fails, we don’t. We can’t fail to ourselves, we have to stand strong and save guards ourselves, save guards our nations and our little red dot. Decisions cannot be made by other and we follow. We also have to make our own decisions. If the decisions were to be wrong from the other country and we follow them blindly our little red dot will soon be destroyed in other hands. Therefore, we should save guard our nation and little red dot with our own decisions, I am pretty sure that whatever decision that the Singapore government made the citizens will be in for it and go for it together as one nation.

However, being independent is not enough. Singapore has to make friends with other country. As Singapore has limited resources to support ourselves therefore maintaining interdependent relations will be good for Singapore as well as other nations. An example will be the bilateral relationship with China. Singapore is small however we do not have enough populations. We need populations and China is supporting us with their populations. Many citizens of China had come over to Singapore to work and to settle down. Singaporeans is also going over to China to work and find business opportunities. Singaporeans who are going over also made the effort to study their cultural and learn their languages. This bilateral relationship has been with Singapore for 20 years. MM lee kuan yew hopes that this will continue for another 50years and I am sure that Singapore is able to maintain this bilateral relationship and even go beyond that. However we came just maintains ones relationship but with other nations as well.

Why is English Important?

English is probably the most important subject that your child studies at school. Without knowing it your child will not be capable to communicate with his English peers. She would be shut off from education and other people in this country. High brain activity appears to be if you know many foreign languages. This happens because with the help of words we build out thoughts and it has been

Child Development

There are different developmental domains of children which all relate to each other:
• Physical development - Concerning the physical growth and the development of both gross (e.g. walking) and fine motor (e.g. finger movement) control of the body.
• Perception and sensory development - How a child functions using the senses and the ability to process the information gained.

Being Kids

I sometimes worry that children in this century are not allowed to really be kids. They are constantly surrounded by adult commentary and much of the television programing contains adult humor. We all laugh when a child on TV says something sarcastic or profound. Statements that in the real world usually don't occur. A college student mentioned to me recently how much she enjoyed the movie Kindergarten Cop when she was a child. I remember that movie well as I was a male kindergarten teacher at the time. The movie was funny and entertaining, but I was dismayed by the fact that most of the things the kindergartners said in that movie would not even occur to a five year-old. Again, adult humor masked as child humor.
I was observing a student teacher working in a first grade classroom the other day. She was reading a joke book (the children's choice) for a few minutes prior to leaving for the day. She told the following joke:
"Knock, Knock."
"Who's there?"
"Mississippi."
"Mississippi Who?"
"She's married to Mr. Sippi!"
The children laughed and laughed at the joke. A simple joke for a child's humor. I love to see children who are able to be children. I wish everyone could have a lengthy and humorous childhood. Maybe adulthood would be a happier experience, as well.
My second grade grandson loves jokes. I think I will go call him and tell him my latest.....

Healthy Kids Learn More

It is a known fact that healthy children are able to be better learners in a classroom setting. Recently, an Ultra Healthy Blog titled, “Top 50 Early Childhood Health Blogs" named the 50 top early childhood health blogs. Although my blog was named as part of the list, there are some great resources for helping to keep young children healthy.
Childhood obesity is certainly an epidemic in our country. I think my biggest frustration with this epidemic are the factors that we can do something about, such as outdoor play at school. Schools that limit or cancel outdoor play with the excuse of needing more learning time are not doing anything to help student learning. I think some schools just don't want to deal with any problems that may occur on the playground. To my way of thinking, they are sacrificing the health of the children in their care. I'm still waiting to see documented research that says cancelling recess increases student learning. I think I will be waiting a long time. All the while, young children are getting more sedentary. I think a better idea is to give teachers resources to help children stay healthy.

Start with the Sun

I was talking to my favorite 5 year-old last week about the projects she creates. I asked her, "How do you know what to make or draw?" Her answer surprised me very much. She said to me, "First you have to start with the sun." When I asked why she started with the sun, she stated it was because it was going to be a 'happy picture' (duh!) Wow, what a life lesson. Anything can be accomplished if you start with a sun. Sometimes it is a bit depressing at this time of year when we are waiting for the spring sun to start shining. My little Kaylee was telling me that sometimes we have to make our own shiny sky. If you begin with the sun, then everything following can be a happier picture.

I saw an old friend of mine this morning at the gym. He always has a smile on his face and the room just seems a little brighter when he is around. I realized he was my sun this morning and it really was like the sun starting out my day. I thought of Kaylee's advice and realized how much joy we can bring to those around us if we just 'start with the sun.' That is exactly how I felt when I was a kindergarten teacher. I guess the day is REALLY sunny with 24 suns!

Catch Him!

A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to live in Ireland for a period of time. Having that first-hand knowledge comes in handy at this time of year. When I was a classroom teacher, I always made a big deal about St. Patrick's Day. I used it as an opportunity to introduce the children to the country of Ireland and a little information about the Irish culture. Playing on the spoof of the leprechaun made the activities fun and adventurous. We would go on a Leprechaun Hunt or leave little goodies out for the little guy. In later years, I have seen my grandchildren build leprechaun traps to try to catch the perpetrator who was turning their milk green in the fridge.

I have always looked upon the tall tales of leprechauns as a folktale and true fantasy stemming from the Irish culture. Studies have been done that indicate that children build great foundations from folktales. In fact, folktales and fairytales provide an example of complete fantasy for young children. With virtual reality appearing in games and movies, it is difficult for young children to differentiate between fact and fiction. Folktales provide an opportunity for children to experience something that is complete fantasy. Folktales have no pretence of being real.

So, set up your leprechaun traps and see what happens to the young children around you!
